By Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent

A CARNDONAGH family were last night maintaining a vigil at the bedside of Kenny Kelly (27) at Altnagelvin Hospital.
The Western Health and Social Care trust said that Mr Kelly was in a “critical condition” after being transferred to the Waterside hospital by ambulance following a single vehicle accident at Convent Road in Carn at 11.45pm on Sunday night.
Gardaí at Buncrana said that Mr Kelly’s Mitsubishi Evo collided with a wall adjacent to Kelly’s service station on Convent Road at 11.45pm. The road remained closed with diversions put in place for most of the day while technical examinations were carried out at the scene.
The scene of the crash on Convent Road in Carndonagh. The son of Paddy Kelly (Charlie Neil) and Elizabeth Kelly nee Davenport of Convent Road in the town, Kenny works in England and regularly comes home to Carndonagh at the weekend.
Originally from Glengad, Paddy Kelly’s cousin John Kelly, and his son Stephen, died in the Carrickatine tragedy in 1996.
The crash came less than 24 hours after three men lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident near Ballyshannon on Sunday morning. PJ Branley, the mayor of Ballyshannon, Dessie McNulty from Ballintra and Michael O’Sullivan from Ballyshannon all died in a collision between two vehicles on the N13 between Donegal Town and Ballyshannon.
Meanwhile, Carndonagh will fall silent this morning as the town pays its respects to Sean McDaid (Birdie) who tragically drowned a fortnight ago while on holidays with his wife Ellen and young family in Majorca. Mr McDaid’s remains returned to Carndonagh over the weekend and were waked at the home of his parents, Billy and Maureen, on the Mountain Road. The requiem mass will be at 11am this morning.
