THE USE of paint alone is useless in highlighting
the dangers that traffic islands pose to motorists.
That's according to Moville-based councillor Marian
McDonald who renewed her call this week for traffic
islands to be fitted with cats' eyes on their cement
bases to maximise safety.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent after she
raised the motion at Monday's meeting, Cllr.
McDonald said she received full support from other
members of the council for her motion.
She explained that while she had been informed that
there is no provision for including cats eyes on
traffic islands at present, she was encouraged to
press the National Roads Authority to change this
policy.
“I was told that as a rule cats eyes are not used in
lit up areas, but was also told there is merit in
providing them on traffic islands especially as an
aid to motorists when public lighting malfunctions.”
The Moville based councillor said she was urged to
re-word her motion to call on the NRA to provide
cats eyes on all traffic islands both inside and
outside speed control areas.
She added that she accepted the suggestion from
council engineers to re-word the motion adding that
she would also be seeking support in councils in the
26 counties and in the 6 counties.
“This really is an all-Ireland road safety issue
because there is no doubt that paint alone on these
islands is useless as a safety measure particularly
in foggy conditions or when the lighting is poor.”
The motion was seconded by councillor Rena Donaghey
and councillor McDonald said she would be urging the
NRA to act on this immediately to ensure greater
safety before the onset of the winter months. |
