GARDAI are still
awaiting results that would confirm whether or not a
large wildcat is at large in the countryside around
Newtowncunningham.
Dropping samples have been sent away for analysis to
ascertain what type of animal is on the loose.
There were a number of reported sightings of a large
black cat such as a cougar, or a panther and it is
believed the feral cat mauled a flock of sheep in
the Ballylawn area of Manorcunningham. The creature
was later spotted by locals fleeing the scene across
the fields.
Gardai, a local ISPCA inspector and wildlife
officers held a meeting in Letterkenny following the
sightings as concerns grew about future attacks.
They said they were treating the sightings as
"extremely serious".
Superintendent Vincent O'Brien's office said there
were no further reported sightings last week. A
spokesperson said they were expecting the results of
the dropping samples sometime this week. |
