DONEGAL County Council
and Derry City Council are working closely to find
ways of attracting international sports events to
the North West, it's been revealed.
Details of high-level meetings between the two local
authorities in recent weeks have emerged.
Among the other issues discussed at the cross border
talks were the Gateway Innovation Fund as well as
better investment in road, rail and Derry City

Donegal county manager
Michael McLoone said sports development and cross
border health issues were high on the agenda.
"Both Councils are working closely to implement
innovative sport and recreation programmes on a
cross border basis and to provide facilities that
will enable the North West region host international

events," said Mr. McLoone.
"We also held very constructive talks on issues
relating to the health system in the Republic and
Northern Ireland and how more needs to be done to
work on a cross border basis to improve services and
ensure that residents of the North West can access
the best health care available no matter where they
live or work."
Derry City Council chief executive Tony McGurk said
it was important that Derry and Donegal worked
jointly to "exploit whatever economic opportunities
arise that can benefit people living in the region".
"The North West region has a well deserved
reputation as a location of excellence. We have a
well educated youthful workforce and have the will
to get the work done. We believe that the financial
services sector provides us with a unique
opportunity to provide a vibrant economy for the
region," said Mr. McGurk.
Mr. McLoone added that the meetings had been "hugely
successful and beneficial to both Councils" and
subsequent meetings have been arranged over the
summer months. |
