BUNCRANA is mourning
the death of local Councillor Philip Diggin who has
passed away at his home after a long illness.
The Independent councillor, who was in his late 40s,
was popular among voters in his hometown for his
no-nonsense style and behind-the-scenes hard work on
issues important to them.
A councillor for many years, he was also a secondary
school teacher at Crana College.
He topped the poll in the 2004 local elections and
was also a former chairman of Buncrana Town Council.
He had served on a number of committees during his
political career including the Donegal Vocational
Education Committee (Donegal VEC).
Fianna Fáil Senator Cecilia Keaveney this morning
paid tribute to the late councillor. “It was with
great regret I learned of the death of Philip this
morning. He was a popular and very active member of
the community of Buncrana and indeed Inishowen. His
friendly nature endeared him to many through not
only his political work but also through his work as
a teacher and socially.
"As chair of the board of management of Moville
Community College, I pass on my sympathies and those
of the board to Philip's family. As a fellow board
member he had made an important input to the new
school.
"He will be very sadly and badly missed especially
by his family but also all of us who knew him," she
added.
Funeral arrangements are still being finalised
