Derry services to come to standstill 11.07.08

CITY of Derry Airport could be seriously disrupted next week as local Council staff stop working as part of an all-out industrial action over pay.
Most of Derry City Council's facilities and services will close to the public on Wednesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 17 as part of the dispute.
City of Derry Airport Acting town clerk and chief executive, John Meehan said exemptions had been granted for cemetery staff while an update is expected shortly in relation to the local airport.
"Constructive discussions with UNITE unions are continuing to minimise disruption for a key service such as
City of Derry Airport," said Mr. Meehan.
"It is hoped that a decision is imminent to assist with advising the public of travel arrangements. At this stage no change to services at City of Derry Airport has been advised."
Refuse collection for cityside households will grind to a halt while the city's civic amenity sites will also close to the public for the two days. Derry City Council’s civic offices and the Guildhall will close for the two days while all leisure facilities including Templemore Sports Complex, Lisnagelvin, Brooke Park and the City Baths will close to the public. The Council’s museum services will also be affected with the Harbour Museum, Workhouse Museum and the Tower Museum remaining closed to the public. Derry Mayor Cllr. Gerard Diver explained that normal service would resume on Friday, July 18.
