Text campaign to help
raise money for playground

A HARD-pressed Community Playgroup is hoping that
the people of Inishowen will get behind their
campaign to raise much-needed funds by voting for
them in the AIB Better Ireland Awards Scheme.
Desertegney Community Playgroup is based in a small
pre-fab near the chapel at Desertegney and caters
for sixteen youngsters from the Parish aged between
3 and 5.
The playgroup has been kept going over the years by
the fantastic support of people in the locality, but
having spent lots of money on a massive
refurbishment of the pre-fab last year, they have
been left with little left in the kitty.
And that means that whenever there is a good day the
children can’t get outside because there is nowhere
for them to play.
Playgroup leader Margaret Doherty explained that the
children are always asking to get outside,
particularly when the weather is good as it was last
week, however without proper fencing and playground
equipment they cannot allow the children out to
play.
“We really need the money to provide a playground
outside for the children and we’re hoping that as
many people as possible will text in and vote for
us.”
The playgroup is competing for a prize of €10,000
but face stiff competition with local secondary
schools Crana College and Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana
also seeking the top prize in the AIB programme.
“Even if we don’t win the top prize we will get
money from the votes that are sent in by text for
us, so we really hope that people all over Inishowen
will get behind us because it really is a good
cause.”
That said, the playgroup is hoping that people
across the peninsula, especially those who like to
champion the underdogs, will get behind their
campaign to provide facilities for the children.
Voting commenced on May 6 and will continue until
June 6. Anyone wishing to vote for Desertegney
Community Playgroup should text “Buncrana B” to
53099.
Each text vote costs 60c including VAT plus standard
network charges, and all proceeds (after operator
charges and VAT) will go to the relevant
short-listed group, regardless of the final voting
outcome. |
