Buncrana falls silent for

BUNCRANA fell silent
yesterday afternoon for the funeral of much-loved
local councillor and teacher Philip Diggin.
St. Mary's Oratory was packed to overflowing as
hundreds of mourners, young and old, gathered to pay
their last respects to the 51-year old father of
two, who died late last week after a long illness. |
His brother Fr. Fintan
Diggin, the parish priest of Clonmany, celebrated
the Requiem Mass that was also attended by retired
Bishop of Derry, Dr. Edward Daly.
Moving tributes were paid to the soccer-loving
Buncrana man who had served as a local Independent
councillor for more than 20 years and who was a
long-time |

commerce teacher at
local secondary school Crana College, where he was
highly popular among students over the years.
Figures from local politics including his long-time
friend and colleague, Buncrana Town Mayor Cllr. Paul
Bradley joined with scores of others from the field
of education and sport to say their final farewells.
The funeral service took place at 2pm in the Oratory
followed by burial in St. Mary's cemetery, Cockhill.
