Life-line for Greencastle
fishermen
05.12.08
GREENCASTLE fishermen
have been thrown a life-line following the EU
Commission's decision to re-examine its proposed ban
on whitefish fishing off the coast of Donegal.
The Federation of Irish Fishermen met Fisheries
Commissioner Joe Borg on Thursday at which Mr Borg
was told about the "devastating consequences" such a
ban would have for communities such as Greencastle.
Mr Borg also met with Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins and,
on his request, members of the European Parliament's
fisheries committee. |
"The Federation argued
strongly that it is working on an alternative
strategy which would enable fishing of the white
fish species to continue while taking into
consideration the scientific data which the
Commission has gathered," said Mr Higgins.
"Hopefully when the alternative plan is presented to
the Commission, a workable and |
|
acceptable agreement
can be reached.
"I will continue to support the work of the
Federation and will be liaising closely with them to
ensure the original Commission proposal is not put
into action," he added. To read Greencastle
