TALENTED Inishowen
soccer players will this week vie for glory in the
Foyle Cup tournament that has attracted a whopping
118 teams and their supporters from four continents
to Derry.
The city has welcomed the commencement of the
University of Ulster football competition which
kicked off on July 22 and runs until July 26. The
Inishowen Youth League; the Donegal Schools League
and the Letterkenny Schools League are among the
participants.
The event has been financially supported by Derry
City Council and is one of the city's key
competitive football tournaments. This year's event
is the biggest ever and Derry Mayor, Councillor
Gerard Diver said he was hopeful that it would be
another tremendous success for all involved.
"The Foyle Cup is an excellent event for providing a
platform for the city to showcase the range of
facilities we have to offer and our ability to
organise international sporting events," said Cllr
Diver.
"The event continues to make a significant impact on
our economy with hotels and other accommodation
facilities being filled to capacity over the
duration of the competition. The Council is
delighted to be associated with the event and
remains committed to promoting sport and healthy
living for young people."
The tournament brings huge numbers of participants
and their supporters to the city each year and
provides young people with a unique opportunity to
represent their community and make new and lasting
friendships. The peninsula is also likely to feel
some economic spin-off from the major football
festival. Further information about the competition
