Gearing up for big
Gleneely reunion
18.04.08
SCOIL Mhuire Gleneely
will hold its first ever school reunion dinner dance
in August and the organising committee is selling
tickets and seeking memorabilia and old photos.
The dinner dance will be held in the Malin Hotel on
Friday, 1 August with tickets priced at €25. For
people who can’t make the dinner, €10 dance tickets
only are available.
“We’re looking forward to a big night where people
will get a chance to reminisce and chat about their
schooldays,” said school principal Catherine
McCallion. “Our committee comprises past pupils from
a couple of generations so we’re hoping for a good
turn out.” |

The current school
building dates from 1961 and it amalgamated with the
old Ballyharry School in 1968. However, the old
school in Gleneely dates back to the 1840s when,
according to Brian Bonner’s history of Inishowen,
there were 335 students on the rolls. Today, it’s a
smaller school with some 69 pupils, three teachers
and learning support and home school liaison
officer.
The organising committee includes Mary McDaid,
Catherine McCallion, Paddy McLaughlin, Joe Kearney,
Mari McCallion, Hubert McLaughlin and Niall McDaid.
The idea was born from a conversation between a
couple of past pupils some time ago. “It came out of
the blue, but when we talked with a couple of local
past pupils there was a good interest so we thought
we’d go for it,” Mrs McCallion added. “We’ve
organised it for the August Bank Holiday weekend to
give as many people as possible the chance to come
along and enjoy it.”
The organisers are expecting past pupils from all
over Ireland and as far afield as England, Scotland
and the United States.
They are also gathering photographs and memories
from past pupils and members of staff for
publication in a commemorative magazine. Anyone with
school photos from before 1990 is encouraged to
contact the committee. |
