Inishowen Community Radio scoops award 24.11.08

INISHOWEN Community Radio (ICR fm) has been recognised for its efforts in promoting water safety with the 2008 Irish Water Safety Regional Media Award. The local community station was presented with its award by Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Michael Kitt, in Dublin Castle last week. This was the first time that a community station won the regional award. RTE was the recipient of the national media award. John Leech of Irish Water Safety (IWS) congratulated the station on its achievement.
ICRfm's Trudy McLaughlin picks up the Regional Media Award on behalf of the station from Minister Michael Kitt TD, left, and IWS chairman Frank Nolan, at a ceremony in Dublin Castle. “ICR plays an important role in raising awareness about the dangers our waters hold for the public and the need to be properly prepared when venturing out. "Our waters are a tremendous resource for leisure activities but people need to treat them with respect. Also, it is important that people be trained in life-saving techniques and rescue skills.”
Station manager Jim Doherty said the award was a "welcome boost to the station and a vindication of its role in the community". “It’s brilliant for the station to be recognised like this for doing good and is something that all the volunteers and staff can be proud of. This is what community radio is all about - making a difference in the community and raising awareness about issues that matter,” he said. Rescuers from fourteen dramatic near-death incidents received recognition at the IWS national awards ceremony for saving eighteen lives, including two from Donegal. Tragically, 156 drownings occurred in Ireland last year.
