INISHOWEN-based Judge
Sean McBride has apologised for comments he made
last week about the 'typical thickness' of people
from Co Tyrone.
At this morning's sitting of Clones District Court,
Judge McBride said he wished to address the
controversy surrounding his earlier remarks.
He said that during a long day's work on the bench
he passed a comment that was totally inappropriate
about Tyrone people.
And he said he regretted what he had said and that
his comments were not meant to be offensive.
Judge McBride, who lives in the Greencastle area,
said he had "nothing but regard" for the people of
Tyrone. He apologised if newspaper articles
reporting his comments gave a different impression,
according to a report on RTE.
His initial comments were made at Monaghan District
Court last week after a 22-year-old woman from Co
Tyrone was wrongly summonsed to court because her
details matched those of another woman.
Sinn Féin had criticised the comments and had warned
they would be writing to the Minister for Justice
Dermot Ahern asking the judge to withdraw the
remarks. |
