DONEGAL North East TD
Jim McDaid has been sharply criticised by Taoiseach
Brian Cowen and Government chief whip Pat Carey for
being absent for crucial Dáil votes last week
Kerry North TD Tom McEllistrim who also missed votes
on the emergency Bill to give financial guarantees
to Irish banks, was also criticised for his
absenteeism.
Mr Cowen, who was speaking at a FF parliamentary
party meeting, told them such conduct would not be
tolerated: "If fellows want to be local politicians
then there are places in their home counties where
they can do. The coming months will be difficult and
will require discipline," he said. |
The Government chief
whip, who is said to be very angry about the
behaviour of the two TDs, warned them that a failure
to win financial resolution votes would lead to the
downfall of the Government "and then all of us would
be back out on the road".
However, there is no indication that the TDs will
face disciplinary measures, according to a report in
the 'Irish Times'. It is understood they could lose
the whip for such conduct, but that is deemed
unlikely because the |

Government is just days
away from the Budget. Fifteen Government party TDs
were absent for one of the votes on an amendment to
the legislation last Wednesday, leaving the
Government with a smaller majority than expected. |
