BUNCRANA is to get its
long-awaited Joint Policing Committee (JPC) to help
the community liaise with Gardai to stamp out crime
and anti-social behaviour.
Inishowen Senator Cecilia Keaveney has been informed
by the Justice Minister that priority is to be given
to the establishment of JPCs in all local areas
including the Buncrana Town Council area.
The news comes following regular lobbying for such a
committee by Sinn Féin and particularly the party's
Cllr. Daren Lalor.
Meanwhile, Senator Keaveney said Buncrana would
"benefit greatly" from the move.
"The Gardaí and other agencies of the criminal
justice system cannot alone deal with all aspects of
crime in our society. I know that the vast majority
of people are anxious to do what they can to assist
them.
"A JPC in Buncrana will allow the Gardaí, local
representatives and others with community interest
to come together."
The Donegal senator currently sits on the
Letterkenny JPC and finds it "very useful".
"This local exchange and interaction will help make
policing more responsive to the needs of community
while at the same time allowing the community to
play their full role in tackling crime," she added. |
