06.02.08
LETTERKENNY Institute
of Technology (LYIT) is to receive funding of nearly
half a million euro from the Department of
Education.
The funding is to allow Donegal's only third level
college carry out minor capital works such as window
replacements, roof repairs and mechanical and
electrical upgrades. |

The total amount of
funding awarded is €468,235. It was welcomed
yesterday by Moville-based Senator Cecilia Keaveney
who is the Government's education spokesperson, and
Donegal North East T.D., Deputy Niall Blaney.
"I'm delighted with today’s announcement by Minister |
Hanafin. This funding
will provide the resources for LYIT to progress
smaller projects which can radically improve the
effective use of the existing facilities.
"Our institutes of technology, in particular
Letterkenny, have grown and developed over recent
decades to become an essential part of the education
system," said Senator Keaveney.
She said from its beginnings as a "relatively small
regional college" LYIT had received
tens of millions in funding over the years to bring
it to institute of technology standard.
LYIT awards students up to Master's level.
Deputy Blaney added: "Letterkenny IT and other
regional institutes have contributed so considerably
to the education and upskilling of generations of
students.
"It remains a strong commitment of this Government
to assist in the growth and expansion of the
institutes such as Letterkenny IT to help build on
the excellent collaborative work they are already
doing." |
