Inishowen says 'No'
16.06.08
INISHOWEN'S 'Yes to
Lisbon' politicians will be reflecting this week on
the reasons why the peninsula ignored them and gave
a resounding 'No'.
A total of 25,654 people in Donegal North East
including Inishowen turned out to vote in last
Thursday's referendum. This represented a voter
turn-out of 45.7%. While 144 people spoiled their
votes, there was a valid poll of 25,510 votes. |
|
Of that number only
9,006 voted 'Yes' with the remaining 16,504 people
voting 'No'. In percentage terms, this represented a
'No' vote of 64.7% and a 'Yes' vote of just 35.3%.
And it wasn't a pretty pie-chart either for the
Government south of the county with a 'No' vote of
63.4% and a 'Yes' vote of 36.6% despite it being
Tánaiste Mary Coughlan's heartland.
Donegal North East returned one of the highest 'No'
votes in the country with only Dublin South West
returning higher at 65.1%. |
There was a valid poll
nationally of 1.6 million votes with 53.4% going
against the treaty and 46.6% in favour. The treaty
was rejected by a margin of 110,000 votes. |
