"I'll bring Glengad message to Dempsey" 20.03.08

DONEGAL North East Deputy Joe McHugh has expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the two Glengad fishermen who lost their lives at sea.
Deputy McHugh, who visited the families of the late brothers Danny and Francis McDaid, said he would continue to lobby vigorously for Malin Head Coast Guard marine rescue centre to be retained. And he vowed to make the Glengad families' wishes known to Minister Noel Dempsey.

Deputy Joe McHugh “The Malin Head Coast Guard centre co-ordinated the rescue mission, which located the men in the Belfast Search and Rescue Region. The families insisted to me that Francis' and Danny's bodies might never have been found, had it not been for the great work of the centre," said Deputy McHugh.
"It is a very sad time for a community that has had more than its fair share of grief throughout the years. I will be addressing Minister Noel Dempsey at the next Good Friday Implementation Committee meeting and I will be conveying the thoughts of the families with regard to the future of Malin.
“The retention of the centre has been high on my agenda in the last few months and I will continue to question the minister on the matter. Myself and Councillor Bernard McGuinness have been working closely on the issue. The fact that the search mission ended in the Belfast Search and Rescue Region shows the great co-operation that exists between Malin and Belfast.
"I will continue to impress on the Minister the huge mistake that would be made if services are removed from Malin Head.”
