CLONMANY cook Breid
Devlin showed her culinary talent when she came
runner-up in the National Skills Cookery competition
held in Dublin recently.
Breid studied Professional Cookery at the School of
Tourism in Killybegs and was one of only eight
finalists to compete. The best students from cookery
colleges all over Ireland were selected after a
gruelling local contest to show their culinary flair
on each campus. |

The winners then had to
go head-to-head in Dublin at the national
competition, run by the Department of Education &
Science which takes place over three days. It’s a
tough contest where each student had to prepare a
variety of complex recipes whilst being assessed on
technique, skills, presentation and taste. Judges
evaluated the contestants as they prepared |
dishes and then another
panel marked each one on taste.
Breid who plans to study a Culinary Arts Degree in
September at the School of Tourism was pleased with
her place, “It was a full-on competition, we had to
cook many types of food, canapés one day, fish the
next and miniature desserts the next. All to an
exceptional standard. It’s hard being in the
spotlight but it was a great experience. Gabriel
McSharry accompanied me to Dublin and was full of
knowledge and vital support. Noeleen Boyle was at
the other end of the phone 24/7 for anything I was
unsure about and lots of tips. Both lecturers gave
me fantastic support. I’m really looking forward to
studying again in Killybegs.”
Breid, a student of the School of Tourism at LYIT,
will go forward to represent Ireland in the Euro
Skills Cookery Competition which takes place in
Rotterdam in September. She is also on the Irish
Junior Culinary team for the Culinary Olympics which
will be held in Germany.
The School of Tourism at LYIT run a number of
programmes up to degree level in Culinary Arts and
Professional Cookery which allow students to
specialise in many areas.
