GARDAI are
investigating a fatal road traffic crash yesterday
in which three men including the Mayor of
Ballyshannon, were killed. A car and a van were in
collision around 10am at Ballymagrorty, on the main
road between Ballyshannon and Donegal Town. |
Cllr PJ Branley, the 58
year old Sinn Féin Mayor of Ballyshannon was
confirmed among the dead. A second man in the van,
also believed to be a Sinn Féin member, was also
killed in the collision. The 17-year old driver of
the car also died in the accident. Ballyshannon Town
Council and Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams paid
tribute last night to Mr Branley's work as a
councillor and community leader. |

Fermanagh-born Cllr
Branley was a construction worker and was married
with a family of six. He was elected to Ballyshannon
Town Council in 2004 and had a long history of
community activism. The scene of yesterday's
horrific collision was closed for some time as a
forensic examination got underway. |
