Buncrana Mayor's tribute to Phil Coulter 26.05.08

THE MAYOR of Buncrana Cllr. Paul Bradley has, on behalf of the town, congratulated singer-songwriter Phil Coulter on receiving the freedom of Donegal.
Cllr. Bradley said he was delighted to be invited to the official conferring ceremony last week at the County House in Lifford.
"I would like to congratulate Phil Coulter on being the first non Donegal person to be given the award of 'Freeman of Donegal'.
"The Mayor of Donegal Cllr. John Boyle has to be congratulated for choosing such a worthy recipient," said Cllr. Bradley.
He said the freedom of the county was a "very moving and fitting occasion" for the Derry born composer.

Paul Bradley, Phil Coulter, his daughter Siobhan and Buncrana Deputy Mayor Cllr. Peter McLaughlin. "In his speech Phil talked of his long-standing association with Buncrana and his affection for the area. He talked about his love of Lough Swilly and his album the Lake of Shadows."
Cllr. Bradley said there was much poignancy in Coulter's speech particularly when he paid tribute to the brother and sister
he lost to drowning tragedies in Lough Swilly.
This led to his involvement with the RNLI and his charity concerts to help the organisation bring the first rescue boat to the lough.
The guests for the special occasion included many friends and family of the internationally renowned performer who has kept a home in Buncrana for nearly 40 years.
He told InishowenNews.com prior to the ceremony: "I am thrilled and delighted and very, very honoured. In my line of work you get awards that are related to your work...but the freedom of Donegal? This is completely different. On a personal level, it's very rewarding and unexpected and I'm very grateful and honoured."
A grand piano was installed in Council chambers specially for last Thursday's special occasion and Coulter entertained the gathering with some of his timeless and much-loved classics.
Cllr. Bradley said it would be a day to remember for many years to come.
"Having known Phil and his family for many years, may I, on behalf of all the citizens of Buncrana, wish him every success and happiness in the future."
