THE North's Minister
for Regional Development Conor Murphy is to visit
Donegal next month to discuss the potential
establishment of rail links in the county.
Mr Murphy is to attend a "crucial forum meeting"
organised by Donegal County Council following a
motion by Sinn Féin county councillor, Pádraig
MacLochlainn.
He has called for a cross party and all-Ireland
approach to delivering a rail network to and through
Donegal in the future.
“The news that Minister Conor Murphy is to attend
the forum is a huge boost to the objectives of
Donegal County Council to advance the case for a
rail link to Donegal. I wish to commend all the
elected members of Donegal County Council and
relevant staff for their endeavours in this regard.
Their all party and all-Ireland approach is the only
way that we can deliver on our goal," said Senator
Pearse Doherty.
He said Sinn Féin had argued the case for an
adequate rail link for the region for many years.
"West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty first organised a
seminar and published a campaigning document on the
subject almost a decade ago and since then we have
maintained the focus, including a meeting with the
EU Commissioner for Transport, Jacques Barrot in
Strasbourg a few years back.
"I am therefore delighted that Minister Murphy will
be attending this forum demonstrating his genuine
commitment to equality of access to transport
infrastructure for all people and communities on the
island. He has in the recent past joined me in
meeting with rail campaign groups in Donegal and
this is yet another sign of his goodwill," added
