Carn brothers ready to Rally 10.06.08

Story: Inishowen Independent

THERE will be significant Inishowen interest at this weekend’s Topaz Donegal International Rally, which gets underway on Friday.
Carndonagh duo Daniel and Michael Doherty return to the competition after an absence of three years.
The Doherty brothers, who finished fourth overall seven years ago, last competed in 2004 and they don’t expect their aging Subaru Impreza WRC to trouble the top drivers this time around. A top ten finish would be a great result for the pair in what will be their 10th participation in the Donegal International Rally.
Other Inishowen interest in the premier classification will come from Burt’s PJ McDermott and his navigator Killian Duffy in another Subaru.
The event may lack the glamour of last season, when World Rally champion Sebastian Loeb raced to victory along the county’s byways, but there is a very strong field including Gareth McHale, Mark Higgins and Eamon Boland. Daniel Doherty
The route takes in the scenic Fanad Head, Knockalla and Atlantic Drive but the drivers will need to have eyes only for the road if they hope to reach the finish line. Other Inishowen entries include Muffs Joseph McGonagle in the Honda Civic VTI, Paul and Barry Callaghan from Burt running a Subaru Impreza, Carndonagh’s Paddy Walker and James Logue in the Peugeot 206 XSI, Garrett McMonagle and Mark Maguire from Quigley’s Point (Honda Integra), Redcastle’s Derek McGonagle and John Farren (Ford Escort), Colin McGonagle and Mark Curran from Quigley’s Point (Honda Integra), Redcastle’s Terrence McGonagle and Mark Curran (Honda Civic) and High and Breeda Toye from Quigley’s Point (Honda Civic).
The Topaz Donegal International Rally runs from Friday to Sunday.
