Donegal has second worst recycling
record

A BUNCRANA councillor
has warned that the town can no longer cope without
a civic amenity site.
Cllr Rena Donaghey made the call as a damning report
shows that Donegal County Council has the second
worst recycling record in the country.
Cllr Donaghey told officials at Friday's Inishowen
Electoral Area meeting that Buncrana's growing
population demanded a dedicated recycling depot.
"We have almost 9,000 people in Buncrana and its
environs who need a place to deposit recyclables. We
are the second biggest town in Donegal and we don't
have a civic amenity site," said Cllr Donaghey, who
is also the chairperson of Buncrana Tidy Town's
committee.
She claimed the seaside town would greatly increase
its marks in the national judging if it were seen to
be serious about recycling.
"Most people are very responsible and anxious to
recycle properly but it is ridiculous that our
facilities are so limited," she added.
She said she had been advised that Buncrana and
Killybegs may be put forward as possible sites for
civic amenity sites at an upcoming waste management
meeting Cllr. Donaghey said she looked forward to
contributing to meeting on the issue. |

Meanwhile, a report by
the Local Government Management Services Board (LGMSB)
showed that Donegal recycled just 11% of its waste
last year. This was second only to Carlow where only
8% of collected household waste was recycled.
The highest rate of recycling was in Co Longford at
56% and |
Co Galway at 52%.
Donegal County Council yesterday stated that the
LGMSB report related only to kerbside collections
and did not take account of the bring banks around
the county. The council said the county's kerbside
recycling service was expanding steadily.
Meanwhile, upgrade works at Carndonagh Public
Amenity Site have yet to begin. It is understood
therefore, that recycling will remain free of charge
there for several more months. |
