A GROUP of campaigners
in Moville have asked Donegal County Council to go
head to head in a debate about the a proposed local
sewerage scheme.
The Community for a Clean Estuary (CFCE) said they
were 'dismayed' after learning that the local
authority told the Loughs Agency that consultation
had taken place with them in relation to the Moville
Greencastle Sewerage Scheme.
The group stress that ad hoc conversations between
the Council and some local residents could not be
described as 'consultation'.
"This is an important issue that needs to be
clarified," said CFCE spokesperson, Enda Craig.
"We are absolutely adamant and clear that no
consultation took place with the local community
about the above proposal."
Mr Craig went on to explain how residents had
uncovered the proposal when engineers began
recording noise-levels around their homes for an
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
"As local anxiety increased, Donegal County Council
felt obliged to talk to residents. Discussions after
a decision has been taken cannot be described as
consultation. In fact, there is a widely held belief
that local residents were kept in the dark about
this proposal," added Mr Craig.
The group said that they now wanted to debate the
issue publicly with the local authority.
"In light of these developments, the CFCE wish to
confirm that they have sent a letter to the county
manager inviting Donegal County Council to
participate in a debate regarding the absence of
consultation on the above proposal." |
