A CHURCH community in
Newtowncunningham is celebrating the recovery of
valuable antique silver stolen in a burglary earlier
this month.
The entire collection stolen from the Church of
Ireland was found hidden among trees in Mongorry
Forest north of Raphoe on Monday night. The
discovery was made following a tip-off from a man
who happened upon a hacked-open safe in the woods.
While a sum of cash was missing from the safe, a
further search among the trees revealed the stolen
six pieces of communion silver, three silver
collection plates and three brass flower vases.
The Select Vestry of the Church said the items,
dating as far back as 1725, were made of antique
Irish silver and were of huge monetary as well as
sentimental and historical value. To read an earlier
