Urris outgun Moville

It was a fitting gesture given that Moville’s GAA club have turned to Co Derry native Eddie Divine to find their equivalent of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – deliverance from relegation to Division Three. The size of the task will have become more apparent to the new Moville manager after seeing his new charges out-gunned by an efficient Urris side who could afford to start seasoned regulars Liam Diver, Adrian Doherty and Simon Friel on the bench. Fears that Urris might suffer a hangover from their Intermediate Championship drubbing in the Rosses the week previous were soon dispelled as they quickly asserted their dominance over the Foylesiders. Playing with the aid of a considerable breeze in the first half Urris built up a healthy 0-7 to 0-1 lead by the 20th minute, courtesy of multiple points from Donal Kelly, Alan Friel and Mickey Harkin. In reply, Sean O’Hare put over a free for the hosts. |

Moville got back into the
game in fortuitous fashion five minutes from the
interval when Colin Doherty’s point effort from 30
metres crashed back off the upright into the square to
leave Anton Hegarty with a tap in. That goal left just three points between the sides, but the accurate right boot of right Alan Friel sent two more over at the end of the half to put the Brendan Donaghey’s men up 0-9 to 1-1 at the break. With conditions underfoot extremely heavy this, was not a day for the running game and at the start of the second half Moville executed a fine, long kicking move from goalkeeper Maurice McGeady to left-half back Mark Henry who played in Michael Bonner with a ball in behind the Urris backline allowing the young forward to lash into the net past John Noone from 15 metres. Urris were in no mood to allow their hosts back into the game and they put great pressure on the ball carrier forcing a number of Moville passes to go astray. Moville battled hard but were undone in the air with the full backs allowing the Clonmany men to get in for two close range fisted goals, the first coming from Peter Devlin who rose highest to power Brian Doherty’s delivery from the right past McGeady. That goal put Urris up by five points and they were almost out of sight midway through the half when centre back Tony McGeady was harried into a turnover in front of the Moville goal. Maurice McGeady made a fine save to deny Devlin another goal but then handled the ball on the ground and Harkin converted the resulting free. The game was ended as a contest ten minutes from full-time when Urris substitute Liam Diver scored a carbon copy of his team’s earlier goal, losing his maker to fist home Peter Devlin’s free. That left a virtually irretrievable eight points between the sides and when Anton Hegarty was dismissed late on it only emphasised the hopeless predicament the hosts found themselves in. To their credit, Moville refused to throw in the towel after going down to 14 men. The Doherty brothers, Graeme and Colin, hit points and Sean O’Hare would surely have struck a third Moville goal, after a neat interchange with Seamus Hegarty, but for a last ditch block by Shaun McDaid. Still, Urris were playing within themselves at this stage and might well have gone up the other end and scored further points, had they been required. The win puts Urris deeper into the comfort zone and leaves Moville rooted to the bottom. Their rainbow road is fast disappearing.
