Doherty treble downs Carn

Glengad...4 (Terrence Doherty 3, 50, 73, Patrick McDermott 9) Carndonagh...0 Bad form continues for Coyle’s charges by Michael Stamp, Inishowen Independent, in Glengad BEFORE this game some had speculated that a Glengad victory would be an upset. Against a First Division side, surely Carndonagh’s players with experience of playing in the top league would overcome their opponents. But a look at their respective league positions tells a different story; Carn have six straight defeats from six matches while Glengad have only dropped four points from nine games. In reality only one league place separates both sides and Glengad were very capable of pulling off the so-called upset. Being a cup-tie as well as a local derby, this was anticipated to be a tight affair. However nobody told Glengad and they took the lead with a mere three minutes on the clock. Stephen McLaughlin bamboozled the Carn backline before firing a cross in to Terence Doherty who showed his predatory instinct by rifling in a shot from a tight angle to give Glengad an early lead. Things went from bad to worse for Carn six minutes later when Stephen McLaughlin whipped in a great cross that Patrick McDermott headed in under little pressure from the Carn defence. |

Carndonagh came back with
Dermot Doherty sending in a cross that Patrick
McGuinness had deflected away for a corner. Glengad
almost went three up when John G McLaughlin found
himself one-on-one with Cunningham after good work from
Paul McGonigle, his shot from the edge of the area was
almost connected with by Terrence Doherty. McGonigle
came even closer soon afterwards when his shot was
pushed onto the bar by Cunningham. Patrick Doherty
almost scored soon after for Glengad but his shot from
just outside the area fizzed over the bar. The Carn defence were unable to deal with Glengad’s onslaught at this point and Doherty almost got his second of the day shooting over after winning the ball in midfield. Carn came back with Philip Doherty whipping in a free kick that Darren Loftus headed wide. Loftus shot wide again moments later after a good move involving Brendan Tabb and Niall McLaughlin. Carndonagh’s gameplan had to be altered midway through the half when Andrew McLaughlin came off with a quadriceps injury. His replacement John Doherty made an instant impact combining well with Enda Sweeney down the left flank; however Sweeny’s weak shot was saved by McLaughlin in the Glengad goal. Patrick Doherty made a
great run down the right wing pinging the ball into
Terrence Doherty who uncharacteristically missed the
target. It was more of the same at the start of the second half for Carn with McGonigle sending in a cross that Patrick McDermott fired wide. Carndonagh went a further goal behind five minute into the half when Patrick McGuinness was dispossessed by McGonigle and his cross landed with Terrence Doherty who made no mistake from close range to double his tally. Carndonagh were much better in the second half but didn’t have the killer instinct to punish the hosts as missed efforts from Patrick McGuinness and Niall McLaughlin showed. Terrence Doherty claimed his hat trick with a quarter of an hour left on the clock with a trademark finish – how Carn could use a finisher with the quality of the young Glengad striker. Carndonagh were trying hard but nothing was coming off for them Glengad had their chances but with a four goal lead misses from Terrence Doherty and Paul McDermott were no of no major concern. Four goals up Glengad took their foot off the pedal somewhat and where happy to take progress through to the next round. With no defeats so far this season things are looking good for Liam McClean’s side. Dermot Coyle and Carn however have a difficult task ahead of them to salvage anything from this season.
