Second half collapse
sees home team come unstuck Moville...0-8 (Graeme Doherty 0-5; Sean O’Hare 0-2; Ryan Monagle 0-1) Naomh Columba...1-16 (Pauric Gillespie 0-5; John Kelly 1-1; Andrew O’Gara 0-2; Brendan Cannon 0-2; Liam Boyle 0-2; Conor Butler 0-2; Gavin McGinley 0-1; Enda Gillespie 0-1) by Michael Stamp, Inishowen Independent, at Carrick Field Moville’s horrific start to the Division 2 season continued on Saturday with a disappointing defeat to Naomh Columba of Glen Colmcille. After a good first half performance the home side faded away scoring only three points compared to 1-10 for the visitors. Desperate to avoid an 11th consecutive defeat in the Division Moville had a tough ask against Naomh Columba lying second in the division with two games in hand on leaders MacCumhaill’s. After a draw with lowly Burt the previous week, the visitors were keen to get points back on the leaders and accomplished that feat with a second half display that was so dominant that Moville could barely get a touch of the ball. |

Naomh Columba started well
with Pauric Gillespie opening the scoring with a free.
The away side followed up with another score from Andrew
O’Gara. Moville were competitive in this half however
and the excellent Graeme Doherty notched up three
unanswered points to give Moville the lead. This lead wasn’t to last as Brendan Cannon and Gavin McGinley put over points for Naomh Columba. Sean O’Hare followed up with his first score of the evening to put the teams on level pegging. As valuable as that score was O’Hare followed up with a score that was even better to put Moville ahead, an excellent long range effort that showed Moville were not content to merely make up the numbers. However they went into the second half behind with Pauric Gillespie and Liam Boyle chipping in for Naomh Columba. After a competitive first half Moville fell to pieces after the interval. Much of this could be attributed to terrific display by Naomh Columba who showed why they are riding |
so high in the division. Moville got off to the worst possible start conceding a goal less than two minutes into the half. Indecision in the Moville defence let John Kelly in for an easy goal. The away side followed this up with a good move down the right leading to a well-taken score by Brendan Cannon. Another point for the visitors came soon after with Liam Boyle chipping over. Moville managed to get a point back through Ryan Monagle who took a Michael Bonner free well and kept his composure to convert a good score. The away side seemed to take this as an insult as they replied immediately with a point through Pauric Gillespie. With a six point lead the Glencolmcille side could even afford a few wides with John Kelly and Oisin McGinley missing the target. Moville pulled a point back through Graeme Doherty before Pauric Gillespie put over a free from just inside the 21. Gillespie hit wide soon after but Naomh Columba didn’t have to wait to long to convert again with sub Conor Butler chipping in with two points in three minutes. Andrew O’Gara and John Kelly converted for the away side also as Moville struggled to get a foothold in the game. Things almost got worse for Moville when a chip in from Brendan Cannon was dropped by keeper Maurice McGeady and nearly fell to Naomh Columba’s Conor Butler but the Moville defence managed to clear it. This proved to be a brief surcease for the home side as John Kelly added another point for Naomh Columba before a great score from Enda Gillespie after good interplay involving Brendan Cannon. To their credit Moville were still trying hard but football is a difficult game to play without a ball. Graeme Doherty managed to put a point over for the home side to give the scoreline a veneer of respectability but the visitors weren’t finished yet and brought their tally for the night to 1-16 with Gillespie converting again. A brave first half performance from Moville but they can’t afford a repeat of the second half effort when they play Naomh Mhuire in the championship next weekend.
