AFTER their disappointing FAI Ladies Intermediate Cup exit at the hands of Ashe Rovers, Carndonagh’s ladies have been in a rich vein of form. Recent back-to-back victories over Illies and Glengad have featured ten goals scored and none conceded leaving them in a good position in the league. QPS on the other hand had suffered a disheartening defeat to Greencastle in their last outing and needed a victory.
Carndonagh had the brighter start with Zoe Doherty having a ball from the left parried by Maria McColgan before the QPS defence could clear. The Swifts came back with Caroline Procter striking an awkward shot from the edge of the area that Edele McElroy had to put out for a corner. A long ball forward from Patricia Gallagher almost made it as far as Claire Kelly but Carndonagh keeper McElroy beat her to it.
A free kick from Anita Doherty caused confusion in the QPS defence but they managed to clear the danger. Carn came close again with Roisin McDonald lobbing just wide. QPS came back with great work from Angela McCallion down the left ended up with Procter who hit a weak shot straight at McElroy. Zoe Doherty came close with a free kick from the edge of the area that deflected off the QPS wall straight into the hands of Maria McColgan. A long ball out of defence to Roisin McDonald gave Carn another chance but her shot went straight into Maria McColgan’s arms.
That wasn’t Carndonagh’s best chance of the half however. That came when Anita Doherty sent a ball forward to Danielle Gordon who managed to take the ball past Maria McColgan but had her shot cleared off the line by Danielle McColgan. Another chance went a-begging for Carn when Roisin McDonald managed to break clear of the QPS defence but shot straight into the keeper’s hands. QPS came back with Anne Marie McIntyre getting a
shot away that McElroy held. Jessica Doyle also came close with a corner that ended up in the side netting.
After the interval the Point were the better side with Doyle striking a free kick that McElroy had to fist away, the ball landed back to Doyle whose half volley went just over. Claire Kelly was also unfortunate to see her shot sail just wide for QPS moments later.
The Swifts were made to rue these misses on the 48th minute when Carndonagh took the lead. A good cross from Denise Doherty caused panic in the QPS defence and Zoe Doherty was the beneficiary with a side-footed finish into the bottom corner that gave McColgan in the QPS goal no chance. The Point tried to come back into it with a long free kick into the Carndonagh penalty area that just missed the run of Caroline Procter.
This was as good as it got for QPS as the remainder of the match saw Carndonagh enjoying the majority of chances and possession however they were unable to stretch their lead and at 1-0 remained vulnerable to a QPS counter attack. The closest the home side came to a second goal was when Aisling Newton headed just over from a Zoe Doherty corner. Zoe Doherty also hit a free kick that nearly floated into the corner of the QPS goal and Anita Doherty went wide with an audacious strike from the half way line.
QPS almost stole a point at the death when Angela McCallion headed a Patricia Gallagher free kick just wide but Carndonagh held on to take the three points and maintain their good run of form.
