Familiar failings resurface
for Moville
|
Moville...0-4 (N McMonagle, E Hegarty, McBride, O’Hare) Naomh Mhuire...0-11 (McGinley 0-7, M O’Donnell 0-3, Kelly 0-1) by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent, at Carrick Field Naomh Mhuire coasted through to the Intermediate Championship semi-final with a comfortable win at sweltering Carrick Field on Sunday lunchtime. The Kincasslagh men won by the same score as in the first leg at The Banks at the start of the July and the fact that Moville’s combined points tally from the two games would have fallen four points short of winning either match points to a serious deficiency in either creating or taking scores. Or both. Whereas at the Banks, Moville’s opportunities were limited, here they had an abundance of chances but routinely failed to find the target. |

The Inishowen side kicked
13 second half wides, nine in the first twenty minutes
of that half alone–a wastefulness that torpedoed any
hopes Sean McBride’s side had of forcing a playoff with
the Mullaghduff men. The visitors were missing full forward Paddy McCafferty, but the excellent Ciaran McGinley ensured he wasn’t missed. Naomh Mhuire’s right corner forward was superb, hitting seven points all from play. Just as they had done in the first leg, Naomh Mhuire did the damage at the start of the second half. Leading by five points to two at the break McGinley hit three points in the space of five minutes to put his side up by six. His first of these was somewhat controversial. McGinley was penalised for over-carrying. Moville’s haste to take a quick free saw the ball played into the Naomh Mhuire player’s arms. He could hardly be blamed for blocking down the pass and putting the ball over the bar, but he did not appear to have retreated the necessary distance when the free was being taken. There could be no complaints about his next two scores. Naomh Mhiure’s half forward line were in charge at this stage and Thomas McHugh found Mel O’Donnell to put his side |
up by nine points to two.
John McGeady was ineffectual in the full-forward position in the first half and Moville switched to a two man full forward line in the second half, with McGeady providing an extra midfield body. The tactic paid off as the home side won far more breaks than in the opening half. Moville were without the services of PJ Barr and how they could have done with the absent half forward’s composure in front of the posts on Sunday. Joe McBride, Danny Murphy, Eunan Hegarty and Sean O’Hare all kicked wides before Moville reduced the deficit to six after 40 minutes when Tony McGeady hit a good early ball into Ryan McMonagle who broke the ball down for McBride to shoot over. The frustration grew for Moville as Nigel McMonagle hit a pair of bad wides from inside 20 metres. At the other end, on one of their rare second half raids, Naomh Mhuire should have had a goal in the 48th minute but Moville keeper Maurice McGeady made his second fine stop of the match, this time from Mel O’Donnell after McGinley played him through on goal. Goals were what Moville needed as the game entered the final ten minutes but what they got were more wides as the men in the sky blue shirts failed to seriously threaten Lee Boyle. Naomh Mhuire made a slow start to the game and kicked three wides before Nigel McMonagle gave Moville an 8th minute lead. Ciaran McGinley hit the first of his points in the 13th minute, and when he added another two minutes later Naomh Mhuire had a lead that they wouldn’t never relinquish. McGinley used great strength to beat Geariod McQuillan on the outside to hit his third on 20 minutes before Mel O’Donnell made it four points to one a minute later. There was a composure to the Naomh Mhuire play that Moville sorely lacked. Eunan Hegarty reduced the deficit to two points before Mayo man Joe Kelly put a goal between the sides with a great point from just outside the 45. Moville might have gone into the break level when John McGeady broke down a high ball into the square for Ryan McMonagle but he flashed the ball across goal. It wasn’t his or Moville’s day.
