Second half collapse gives
Naomh Mhuire facile win Burt...0-6 Ronan McLaughlin 0-1; Kevin McDermott 0-1(1f); Ciaran Dowds 0-1; Paddy McDermott 0-1; Shane McDaid 0-1(1f); Benny McDermott 0-1(1f) Naomh Mhuire...0-16 Ciaran McGinley 0-8 (6f); Seamus Gallagher 0-2; Owenie McGarvey 0-2 (1f); Paddy McCafferty 0-1; Brian Gillespie 0-1; Paul Boyle 0-1; Sean Gallagher 0-1. by Jonathan Downey, Inishowen Independent, in Glenswilly DESPITE a close encounter between both teams in the first half, Naomh Mhuire took complete hold of this play-off of the second half and deservedly booked their place in the first round proper of the Intermediate Championship. Both teams shared the play possession wise but the Annagry side’s win was purely elemental. Burt showed a lacking in fitness and movement, a factor that became very apparent to Naomh Mhuire at the start of the second half. It was the fourth game between these sides already this season. This obviously favoured Annagry, who had one first-team starter missing whilst Burt had a number of senior regulars missing. |

It was Burt who drew first
blood. Ciaran Dowds and Shane McDaid worked well to feed
Ronan McLaughlin and he opened the scoring with a point.
A minute later Naomh Mhuire levelled through wing-back
Brian Gillespie. Kevin McDermott put Burt back in the lead with a pointed free in the seventh minute just before team-mate Ronan McLaughlin was substituted due to an injury. Paul Boyle collected a ball from Joe Kelly and pointed over to level the scores again on the ten minute mark. Naomh Mhuire’s immense free-taker Ciaran McGinley added two pointed frees for his side in the 12th and 14th minutes. Burt responded with two well worked points with Eamon Reddin assisting Ciaran Dowds and Mickey McCann holding the ball strongly for Paddy McDermott’s awkward angled shot 20 minutes in. |
However Naomh Mhuire went
ahead a minute later through a Ciaran McGinley free. The
reigning Junior Champions wrapped up the first half in
the 29th minute when Seamus Gallagher snapped on a
breaking ball and pointed over. Nobody in the sizeable crowd expected one side to completely dominate the second period with the score at 0-6 to 0-4 in Naomh Mhuire’s favour. The Annagry boys scored three points in the first four minutes and this hit the Burt side hard. Sean Gallagher, Ciaran McGinley and Owenie McGarvey pointed those scores, two of which came from 50/50 breaking balls. Naomh Mhuire’s five point lead increased through a Ciaran McGarvey free and Paddy McCafferty who ran superbly well to take his score. Two more scores from Ciaran McGinley and Owenie McGarvey frees in the 42nd and 43rd minutes gave Naomh Mhuire a 0-13 to 0-4 lead, and seven points unanswered in the second half. Burt were finding it difficult to manoeuvre the ball past the middle third. Burt’s discipline also started to drop with Ciaran Dowds, Rory Grant and Mark McGavigan picking up yellows. Burt finally scored in the 44th minute with a Shane McDaid pointed free, which was followed up two minutes later with Benny McDermott also putting over a free. Those points did little to deter Naomh Mhuire with Ciaran McGinley pointing from play. Seamus Gallagher gave Naomh Mhuire a nine point lead in the 53rd minute before Burt were reduced to 14 men when Ciaran Dowds picked up his second yellow. In the 61st minute Ciaran McGinley aptly wrapped up the game with another pointed free. Moville now await Naomh Mhuire in the Intermediate Championship first round and whilst Burt now have the league to concentrate on, a sickening fifth encounter still awaits both sides in the league.
