CARNDONAGH squeezed past the challenge of a committed Naomh Padraig at a breezy Foden on Saturday evening to take a lead into the second leg of this preliminary Junior championship tie with their fellow Inishowen men.
Much in the manner of their recent league meeting Carndonagh had the better of the early exchanges but couldn’t land the knockout blow, which meant they were always susceptible to the sucker punch.
Ciaran Canny’s side started this game like they meant business and led by a goal and a point to no score inside the first three minutes. However Naomh Padraig came back at them on this and subsequent occasions and might have sneaked a win themselves in the closing stages as it was they who finished the match the stronger.
Carndonagh caught their opponents cold at the start of the game and Robert McCartney found the net after only one minute when a high Darren Burke ball was well fielded by Dermot Keaveney and the Naomh Padraig corner-forward played in his attacking accomplice for an excellent to chance beat Gerard Harkin and he didn’t disappoint.
The pace of half forward Christy McLaughlin caused Naomh Padraig a lot of bother and he drove forward with the ball to fire the home side into a four-point lead.
Dermot Keaveney passed up Naomh Padraig’s first scoring chance in the 4th minute but a couple of minutes later they got their first point when Raymond Buchannan played in Martin Duffy.
Kevin Lynch’s side hit their stride and put over the next three points of the match to pull within a point of Carndonagh after Darren Burke put over the first of his four frees.
Burke played a key role for home side going forward but it would be wrong to suggest he was a master of the dead ball on the day as the Carndonagh half-forward accounting for six of his sides ten wides.
At the end of the second half the two Gerards in midfield for Carndonagh, Doherty and Simpson, enjoyed good success against Dermot McColgan and Barry Hegarty and their play provided a decent platform on which Carndonagh built up a lead once again. Burke set up Christy McLaughlin who made it 1-3 to 0-4 in the 23rd minute and two minutes later he provide the ammunition for Ronan O’Connor to shoot over.
Goalscorer McCartney then showed a clean pair of heels to his Muff marker on the left before launching a high ball into Darragh McLaughlin who claimed well before pointing in the 27th minute to give the Carn men a four point advantage once again.
At the other end of the pitch Naomh Padraig were making hard work of their possession and were guilty of over elaborating on occasions.
A move involving Eunan Keaveney and makeshift forward Enda McColgan broke down when a second return ball from the former to the latter was intercepted when Keaveney might have gone for goal himself.
Carndonagh, by contrast, mounted moves of a more effective variety, and when O’Connor and Daragh McLaughlin worked the ball across the field from the right Burke was on hand to make it 1-6 to 0-4 and give Canny’s side their biggest lead of the match.
On the stroke of halftime Enda McColgan bounced a shot off the crossbar to send his side into the break with a five-point deficit.
The sides traded scores in the third quarter, Declan McLaughlin and an Aidan Lynch free canceling out a pair of Burke frees.
Lynch also missed Naomh Padraig best goal chance of the match in this period, pulling a right foot shot wide of the near post.
With the score at 108 to 0-8 Naomh Padraig substitute Mark Duffy tested the patience of referee Paddy McKeever when, after he had already been yellow carded, the forward pushed his marker to the ground. McKeever gave him a final warning. With the resulting free Burke found Daragh McLaughlin in the small rectangle but he was crowded out.
Hegarty, Gerard McColgan and then Dermot McColgan popped up with points to leave just the minimum between the sides with three minutes left but try as they might, Naomh Padraig just couldn’t pull themselves level in this game.
Michael Nelson came up with a crucial interception late on for Carndonagh before Mark Duffy blasted wide and Aidan Lynch dropped their final chance short.
Naomh Padraig will feel that this was a game they might well have won, but then Carndonagh seem to have their number this season, this being their third win against the Ture side, should they make it four in a couple of weeks time then they will be on course for a league and championship double.
