Bradley steals victory for Burt
Intermediate championship, preliminary round 1st leg 01.05.08

Burt...1-6

Naomh Mhuire...0-8

by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent, at Hibernian Park

A FREE five minutes into second half injury time from Shane Bradley gave Burt a one point victory over Naomh Mhuire at Hibernian Park Sunday.
Naomh Mhuire must have thought they’d escaped with a draw when corner forward Sean Gallagher chipped over three minutes into injury time, but Bradley had the last word when he converted a free won by substitute Ronan McLaughlin.
Perhaps it was because players are unaccustomed to playing Championship football as early as April, but Sunday’s game lacked the intensity and bite that one would normally associate with championship. Burt won’t mind though, this was their first victory of the season.
Burt played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half but it was Naomh Mhuire who opened the scoring through Tom McHugh after two minutes. Remarkably, it was their only score of the opening period.
Burt dominated the rest of the half but couldn’t convert their superior possession into scores. They opened their account with a Shane Bradley free after three minutes, and the impressive Mickey McCann – who was playing as an extra defender – surged forward 60 yards to double their tally with five minutes gone.
The only goal of the game came after seven minutes. Big midfielder Kevin McDermott won a Naomh Mhuire kickout and passed in to Ciaran Dowds. Dowds laid off to the in-rushing Bradley who slotted the ball coolly past Lee Boyle and into the bottom right corner of the net.
Enda McDermott extended Burt’s lead 1-3 to 0-1 in the 14th minute, but neither side troubled the umpires for the remainder of the game as Burt racked up seven wides and dropped two balls into the keeper’s hands.
Naomh Mhuire made better use of the wind in the second half and relied on Sean Boyle’s accuracy from frees to pull themselves back into the game.
Boyle’s first free came after just two minutes of the second half, but Mickey McCann responded three minutes with a fine effort off the outside of his foot. Substitute Paddy McGarvey pointed with his first touch of the game in the 37th minute and Mel O’Donnell followed up with a point from play to put just a goal between the sides.
Enda McDermott tapped over a point for the home side in the 45th minute, but three frees from Sean Boyle between the 46th and 53rd minutes brought the Annagary side back to within a point of the hosts.
Goalkeeper Dermot Brown kept Burt in it when he made an acrobatic save from Tom McHugh who punched a long ball back across goal in the 56th minute. A Joe Boyle free in the 60th minute was waved wide by the referee, but this was hotly disputed by the home side, albeit to no avail.
Three minutes into injury time half forward Sean Gallagher swung over the equaliser to loud cheers from the Naomh Mhuire support, but Bradley stole victory for Burt with his free two minutes later.
The sides meet in the second leg of this tie on 11 May, and based on the performance in this match, one wouldn’t be surprised if it goes to a third game.
