TWO goals in quick succession by Grainne Byrne in the second half ensured Malin held on for victory over Naomh Pádraig in this Division 3 match on Saturday afternoon.
The first period was a tight affair however with Malin leading by only two at the break and Naomh Pádraig were never out of it. Indeed the home side took to the field after the interval with the wind behind them, but they could just not match Malin’s clinical goal scoring.
Both sides went into the game with a 100% record, and that ensured a hard-fought battle and plenty of intensity, which was exuded by the personal tussles on the field of play.
From the throw-in the setting for the game was set when Muff took a one goal lead, thanks to the movement of the full-forward line which allowed Carla McCloskey to slot home.
With an encouraging breeze Malin were able to settle more quickly despite the setback. Lizzie Kelly pulled a point back for the visitor’s before Una McLaughlin’s awareness found team-mate Breda McDaid and she shot to the back of the net in the sixth minute to put Malin ahead.
Emma Donaghey increased Malin’s lead to two points, before Jessica Doyle and Louise Kelly supplied the ball to Lorraine Lynch to fire home Naomh Pádraig’s second and the game’s third goal in only the tenth minute. Lynch pointed over three minutes later before Muff hesitancy granted Bernie McLaughlin a point. A magnificent solo
run from midfield by Rosie McColgan put Muff two ahead a minute later.
Muff were defending extremely well in the first half, with full-back Jolene McLaughlin getting a hand on everything that came near her. Malin’s centre-half forward, Emma Donaghey, then hit a purple patch with four points, three from play, between the 18th and 25th minute. Those points gave Malin a two point lead, 1-7 to 2-2 at the break.
Just as the first half began with a bang for Muff, two thunderbolts in the 31st and 34th minutes from Grainne Byrne put Malin into an eight point lead. On both occasions the midfielder was afforded space to fire high past goalkeeper Valerie McGrath.
Muff responded with Rosie McColgan moving in full forward in an attempt to claw back into the match. It soon looked to be paying off when Claire Kelly passed to McColgan for her first point of the half. In the 38th minute Lorraine Lynch laid off to McColgan and she hammered the ball past Marie Houton.
McColgan and Jessica Doyle pointed in the 44th and 45th minutes to bring the back to within two points. The final outcome may have been different but for the determined defending of a Maureen Collins led Malin defence.
Malin substitute Aisling McDermott proved more than fruitful in her introduction. She scored 1-2 between the 50th and 55th minute, practically putting the result beyond doubt. Claire Kelly and Rosie McColgan replied with a point each a couple of minutes later for Muff.
In the closing stages there were a couple of chances for Muff to snatch it but with 11 wides to Malin’s four, it arguably proved as important as the goals.
