Drumoghill Celtic...2 Greencastle FC...2 (AET – Drumoghill win 6-5 on penalties) by Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent DESPITE going into an early two nil lead, Greencastle were dumped from the Junior Cup on Sunday by a Drumoghill side who looked dead and buried in the first half, but who fought back gamely in the second to force the game into extra time. In the end fitness probably told a little as Greencastle sat back on their early advantage to allow the Donegal League outfit back into the game that might well have been over at the end of the ninety minutes had it not been for an excellent penalty save from Greencastle keeper Kevin Cavanagh. He was to save again in the shoot out but it wasn’t enough to see his side through and they’ll know they should have made more of their good spell of possession in the first half when they had Drumoghill on the back foot. |

Greencastle took the lead
in spectacular fashion in the 13th minute when the
influential Paddy Keys lobbed Gareth McMonagle in the
Dumoghill goal from all of forty yards. The goal was the first real shot of note from either side and it certainly livened up the match with the home side moving quickly to get back on level terms. They almost managed that in the 17th minute when Christopher O’Donnell’s clever pass split the Greencastle defence but Richard Tinney’s first time shot clipped the crossbar and flew over. But it was Greencastle who had the best of the chances in the first half and after the goal they cut through the home defence on several occasions. Paddy Keys almost got on the end of a Michael Farren free-kick in the 19th minute and a minute later he saw a stinging drive tipped over the bar by McMonagle. Keys and Farren then caught Drumoghill cold with a short corner only to see David Gordon block Farren’s shot on the line. But the home side couldn’t get the ball away from the danger area and when it was played back into the box, centre half Sean Cavanagh was on hand to score from close range and extend the Greencastle lead. Ryan McDermott fired just over in the 28th minute and Liam Kelly saw his shot ending a fine Greencastle move in the 45th minute hit the side netting, but Drumoghill’s only response was a tame effort |
from Ciaran Devine that as
well wide of the target. However the home side were a different side in the second half and it was clear they felt they were by no means out of the game. Christopher O’Donnell came close with a good shot in the 50th minute and then an excellent cross from James Anthony O’Donnell found Andrew Peoples but he steered his header well wide of the target. They were given a lifeline however in the 60th minute when Sean Cavanagh’s was adjudged to have handled in the box but James Anthony O’Donnell saw his penalty brilliantly saved by Cavanagh and Chris O’Donnell fired the rebound over the bar. A minute later though they had reduced the lead, Richard Tinney tucking away neatly inside the six yard box to make it 2-1 and it was very much game on. The long throws of substitute Darryl Duncan caused some difficulties for the visitors but by and large their keeper Cavanagh dealt with balls into the box extremely well. Indeed his only blemish on the day came in the 74th minute when a long range shot from Ciaran Devine somehow deceived him and crept low into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. Cavanagh made up for that in the 80th minute with a marvellous stop to deny Christopher O’Donnell on the 80th minute, while at the other end a minute later McMonagle brilliantly tipped away a fierce drive from Jack Keys. Neither side could muster a winner in normal time and chances were few and far between until the last minute of extra time when somehow Paddy Keys – at the centre of most of the visitors positive moves on the day - blazed over from close range. From then it was on to penalties and it was Drumoghill who held their nerve in the penalty shoot out that went to sudden death before they eventually progressed to the next round by six goals to five.
