Looking good for Glengad

Glengad...1 (Stephen McLaughlin, 73) Carrowmena...0 by Michael Stamp, Inishowen Independent, at Glengad AFTER a good away win last week in Gleneely, Glengad have been rolling in the First Division with two wins and a draw from their opening three games. Combined with an excellent new pitch, things are certainly looking good for Liam McClean’s charges. Carrowmena were involved in the promotion chase last year along with Glengad however a disappointing defeat in their previous game to Rashenny was their second of the season. However their one win of the season was an amazing ten goal trouncing of Sea Rovers which served as a warning to the rest of the division that when on form they are lethal. |

With their superior form
prior to the game the home side were favourites and they
lived up to this, totally bossing the first half with
Carrowmena struggling to get out of their own half.
Terence Doherty was a constant menace to the away
defence having a shot over before being involved in a
lovely move along with Anthony Toland that resulted in
John G McLaughlin firing over. Michael Noone was called
into action shortly afterwards with a cracking save from
a Paul McGonagle shot. Shane Doherty and Anthony Toland
also had efforts but the home team were unable to
capitalise. McGonagle and Terence Doherty were proving to be a real handful for the away side and were ably assisted by their midfield which pressed forwards at every opportunity giving the away defence no peace. Carrowmena fired back with an ambitious free kick from James Gillen which flew over the bar and a cross from Brian Kone which went over. Carrowmena’s best chance up to this point came when a sweetly hit cross from James Gillen was headed just wide by John McGeady. |

Carrowmena’s defence was
forced into a reshuffle within ten minutes after an
under-the-weather Michael O’Doherty was forced to come
off. Not that Carrowmena were offering much resistance
failing to string two passes together and being second
to every ball. Somehow the visitors managed to keep the game goalless despite being second best for the majority of the half. Glengad for all their possession weren’t making Michael Noone in the Carrowmena goal work too hard. This changed minutes into the second period when Patrick Doherty embarked on a good run and laid the ball onto Paul McDermott who forced a good save from Noone with a decent shot. Brian Kone gave warning that Carrowmena were still in the game when he dispossessed a daydreaming Ronan Doherty but after doing the hard part the forward fluffed his lines in front of goal. Carrowmena almost took the lead soon afterwards when Paul Duffy saw his shot land on the roof of the net. Carrowmena were much better in the second half but Glengad were still the superior team and Glengad substitutes Charlie Byrne and Stephen McLaughlin combined to almost give the hosts the lead. A cross from the byline by Byrne landed to McLaughlin but he couldn’t control the ball and another chance went a-begging. The home side had another very good chance when Charlie Byrne found himself one-on-one with Noone but the Carrowmena keeper did well to stand up and save. At this point the Glengad faithful were getting slightly restless as despite their dominance and a plethora of chances they still hadn’t taken advantage. Those fears were quashed when the home side took the lead after 73 minutes. Credit must go to manager Liam McClean as the goal was crafted by two of his substitutes. John G McDermott embarked on a good run and laid the ball on for Stephen McLaughlin who still had plenty to do but managed to steer his shot past Noone. Carrowmena tried to respond but a weak effort from Shaun McGrenaghan which landed in Michael McLaughlin’s hands and a shot wide from Glen Callaghan was as good as it got to that point for the visitors Glengad were aware that one break from the away side would have meant all their hard work would be for nothing so they kept pushing forward in search of a second goal. It almost came from John G McLaughlin who headed just over from a John G McDermott free kick. McDermott and Stephen McLaughlin combined again but McDermott could only hit wide. The away side almost nicked a point late on when a long goal kick fell to Shaun McGrenaghan who found himself one on one with Michael McLaughlin but the Glengad keeper stood tall and cleared the ball. In the dying moments Terence Doherty almost got his reward for a good days shift with a cracking strike that hit the bar. Luckily for Glengad they weren’t made to rue this miss and managed to record what could be a very valuable win come the end of the season.
