Urris...0-05 (J. Gordon 0-2 (1f); C. Hession 0-1; S. McGonagle 0-1; B. Harkin 0-1 (1f)) Milford...4-15 (R. Barrett 1-7; A. Barrett 2-4 (2f); O. McAteer 1-1; A. Gibbons 0-2; C. McGee 0-1) Story: Inishowen Independent AFTER A delay of several weeks, the Urris U12 girls finally lined out in the Donegal A Final in Burt on Saturday but they found opponents Milford too slippery to handle on a wet day for football. Contesting their first girl’s final at the grade, Urris battled gamely throughout but Milford are well used to playing at this level and with Amber and Rebecca Barrett in superb form, they deservedly claimed the title. Urris had much more of the play than the final scoreline might suggest, but their scoring let them down a little bit and they hit a dozen wides over the hour. That said, with Tara Doherty and Vanessa Devlin showing well in defence, they kept plugging away and can be proud of their effort in their first ever county final. Milford signalled their intention from the very start. Amber Barrett won the throw-in and raced towards goal before unleashing a shot past Shannon Devlin and into the bottom corner of the net. |

Urris settled down and were
awarded a free after Brid Harkin was fouled near goals.
The full forward pointed the free herself, but two
points in quick succession from Orla and Rebecca Barrett
had Milford four points ahead. Urris were under pressure, but good defending and tackling from Grainne Hession and Yvonne Devlin helped keep Milford out until the 11th minute. Rebecca Barrett hit a shot to the top corner, and although keeper Shannon Devlin got her hands to it, it hit the net. It was hard lines on the keeper who made a bagful of brilliant saves over the hour. Two points each from Rebecca and Amber Barrett had Milford further ahead before Urris enjoyed their best spell of the match. With Nicole Gordon pulling the strings from centre forward, Jamie Lee Gordon got a good point from play, but that was before Amber Barrett netted her second goal of the match. But Urris kept fighting. A long shot Connie Ann Hession bounced over the crossbar before Jamie Lee Gordon got the final score of the half to make it 3-6 to 0-4 at the break. The rain that had come and gone during the first half returned with a vengeance at the start of the second and crossed the field in sheets. |
But the players didn’t seem
to mind, and battled on regardless. With the elements now on their backs, Milford dominated the second period and points from Rebecca Barrett (4), Amber Barrett and Aine Gibbons put them well clear. But the Urris defence, led by the excellent Tara Doherty and Siobhan Roddy, stuck admirably to their task. Goalkeeper Shannon Devlin pulled off a number of fine saves, but midway through the half one such save fell at the feet of Orla McAteer and she finished it to the net. Urris cleared their substitutes bench and they all got stuck in and helped the black and reds dominate the closing stages. And it was fitting that the last score of the game should go to the Urris girls. Little Nicole Gordon jinked around several defenders and when her route to goal was finally closed, was clever enough to lay the ball back to Sarah McGonagle who took a fine point. At the end, the cup went back up the road to Milford, but Urris will no doubt be back and build on the experience.
