Rashenny lose in penalty shoot out 25.09.08
FAI Junior Cup

Lagan Harps...1
Rashenny FC...1
(Lagan won 3-1 on penalties)

Report: Inishowen Independent

LAGAN Harps made it through to the next round of the FAI Junior cup after this hard fought win over Rashenny FC at Orchard Park. Twelve months ago Rashenny travelled to Manorcunningham play the same opposition at the same stage of this competition and were eliminated late in extra time.
Goalkeeper Declan McDermott proved to be the hero when he saved three of Rashenny’s penalties. Lagan started well and Aidan O’Donnell had a half volley well saved by Michael Toland in the Rashenny goal. Rashenny replied when a cross from Andy Doherty was headed just over by Shane Collins.
Kenny Doran was next to have a go from the edge of the area but Toland pulled off a great save. The same player then had another effort on 20 minutes but Toland again saved. Toland was finally beaten on 25 minutes but Ronan Gibson’s pile driver came back off the crossbar. Rashenny then had a good effort when Shane Collins’ volley was just too high. Half time arrived with the teams deadlocked. Both teams battled away in the second half with both defences remaining on top.
Rashenny grabbed the lead on 70 minutes when they broke after a Lagan attack. John McLaughlin raced past
Declan Sweeney before firing past McDermott.
Lagan responded and equalised two minutes later. When Rashenny failed to clear a corner Chris Toner crossed for Keith Malseed to score.
Jason Burke was denied a winner for Lagan on 80 minutes when Toland got down well to save at his feet. Rashenny were playing some neat football with Lagan going more the direct route, trying to use the pace of Burke and Toner. Burke again went close in the final minute of the first half of extra time, when he headed against the bar. Rashenny were denied what they thought was a winner when Barry O’Donnell cleared John McLaughlin’s effort off the line. Declan McDermott saved Rashenny’s first two penalties in the shootout to give Lagan the lead. Michael Toland then saved Jason Burke’s effort to give Rashenny hope. When McDermott saved Rashenny’s fourth, Keith Malseed stepped up to put Lagan through.
