A LEADING Donegal
surgeon has praised a Buncrana woman who lost six
stone in weight.
Letterkenny hospital consultant, Peter O'Rourke
commended the Inishowen woman as he expressed
concerns about the number of obese patients
presenting for surgery. Speaking on the Shaun
Doherty Show on Highland Radio yesterday, Mr.
O'Rourke defended his stance on refusing, on
occasion, to carry out operations on overweight
people. He was responding after a female patient,
sized 16 and in her 30s, complained after being told
to lose weight before surgery. He said this was the
correct medical decision because the risks
associated with overweight patients in surgery were
far greater than for patients of a healthy weight.
Meanwhile, Mr. O'Rourke praised "a lovely lady from
Buncrana", whom he advised to lose weight. "She lost six stone and didn't
need the operation at all," he said. |
