Ministers open Moville
sheltered housing

HOUSING Ministers
Margaret Ritchie MLA and Michael Finneran TD were in
Moville yesterday to launch a local social housing
scheme built on the site of the former convent.
The Ministers officially opened the luxury Taobh na
Cille Sheltered Housing Project in the town centre
which was built by cross border organisation North
and West Housing and provides high quality safe and
secure housing for 30 elderly residents.
The ministers were welcomed by North and West
Housing (Ireland) chairman Canon Brian Smeaton. They
were told that Taobh na Cille allows its residents
to live a comfortable and independent lifestyle in a
supported environment. |

Minister Finneran said
he hoped to work closely in future with Minister
Ritchie in increasing the supply of housing for
those most in need North and South. The ministers
later travelled to Derry to open two other social
housing projects.

these three new schemes that will provide a very
welcome housing boost for those across the North
West," said Mr Finneran.
North and West Housing chief executive Gerry Kelly
said his organisation was "delighted" to be involved
in the projects.
"We are proud of our partnership approach as it
helps ensure that local residents can enjoy new
homes, in safe accommodation while creating vibrant
communities," said Mr Kelly.
Senator Cecilia Keaveney, who grew up close to the
convent, said had many fond memories of the
building.
"It does not seem that long ago that Maura Cannon,
Annette Faulkner, Cllr Mc Donald and I went in for a
final look around and, indeed out of the old
convent. It had an air of history about it and in
some senses it was sad to think of that history
being gutted.
"However, in recent months it has been a pleasure as
I pass by every day to see my new neighbours settle
into what is a beautiful facility and a tremendous
resource," she said.
Later in Derry, the ministers handed over the keys
to the first residents of 39 new homes and
state-of-the-art leisure facilities at Oakland Park
in Creggan. They also cut the first sod in the Dove
Gardens development which, when built, will provide
63 eco-friendly family homes for residents in the
Bogside. This scheme will be built on a site
derelict for a number of years and includes land
made available by both the Housing Executive and
Derry City Council.
