Busy time ahead for local
vintage men 25.09.08
Ploughing contest and
tractor building championships in next few weeks
MEMBERS of the Inishowen Vintage Club are gearing
themselves up for a hectic few weeks as they prepare
for two national championships in the weeks ahead.
The hard working club members who host a vintage
show in June, a car rally in July and a harvest day
in September, will turn their attentions to
activities of a more competitive nature for the
national ploughing championships and a major tractor
building contest.
Members of the club are thrilled that for the first
time ever one of its members - Sean McDermott - will
compete in the all-Ireland ploughing championships.
Sean will compete in the single furrow class at the
national ploughing championship in Kilkenny,
qualifying for the competition after he had competed
at various matches around the country.
“We’re delighted that Sean has qualified for the
championships and every member of the club will be
wishing him well at the championships that take
place in Kilkenny from 23-25 September,” club
spokesperson Noel Doherty said. |
Meanwhile he explained
that club members would also be flexing their
muscles and fine-tuning their performance for the
Irish vintage scene tractor building challenge.
Earlier this year members of the club were the toast
of the tractor world when they put together a
tractor in under ten minutes as they scooped the
prestigious Irish Vintage Scene trophy. |

The Inishowen team of
Noel Doherty, Darragh Doherty, Joey Lyle and Sean
McDermott took the title at the Ballygawley and
Roscavey Vintage Show but they had to see off the
challenge of a strong team from Mountbellew before
the title was theirs.
Rising to the challenge the Inishowen team clinched
the title in a record time of 9 minutes 44 seconds
to bring the trophy back to the peninsula but they
expect a tough challenge again next time out.
“For the first time ever, its a shoot out between
three teams, and we will be challenged and pushed
all the way by the boys from the Mountbellew club
and the Ballygawley men. It should be a great
competition and this will be an event not to be
missed,” Noel said.
The competition will take place in Cavan on October
5 and everyone in Inishowen will be hoping the local
men can once again come back with the title.
