Donegal farmers get 80 a cow
25.10.07
DONEGAL farmers are to
benefit from a new EU welfare scheme paying them 80
per suckler cow from January.
The measure aims to improve the quality of the
national suckler herd and is open to all suckler
farmers including those with mixed herds. |
|
Deputy Niall Blaney
explained that the scheme was voluntary and will
operate for five years.
The welfare scheme will secure a payment of 80 per
cow up to a limit of 100 cows who comply with six
welfare measures in relation to calves born from the
1st of January 2008," he said. |
"These measures include
animal events recording, disbudding of calves,
castration of bull calves, minimum calving age,
weaning best practice and training and education.
Application forms, help sheets and additional
information will be issued in the coming weeks.
It is vital that we continue to support our suckler
farmers who provide our high quality beef, which is
key to the success of the rural economy," said
Deputy Blaney.
Donegal farmers who need additional information can
phone the Department of Agriculture on a dedicated
Lo-Call number - 1890 252 707 - to go live on
October 30. |
