Alan speaks to the media
19.07.07
Seventeen-year old Alan
Doherty gave his first interview yesterday since
undergoing the first phase of surgery to reconstruct
his lower jaw.
At a press conference in the Mount Errigal Hotel,
Letterkenny, he told well wishers, fundraisers and
the media he was grateful for all their assistance. |
|
Speaking through his
electronic voice simulator, he outlined how the
groundbreaking first round of surgery went at the
acclaimed Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
"It was an eight hours op' and six days in hospital.
Docs and nurses were amazed at my recovery. Thanks
to everyone for helping," he said.
Alan's father is from Clonmany, although the family
now live in Letterkenny.
His aunt Grace McColgan told InishowenNews.com the
told cost of the surgery |
is likely to be in the
region of between €350,000 and €400,000. More than
€100,000 has been raised so far through a number of
back-to-back fundraisers and benefits with a similar
amount needed before the second phase of surgery
begins in New York in October or November.
A long list of events organised by the Friends of
Alan Doherty are scheduled for the rest of the year
and well into 2008, in a bid to realise Alan's dream
of leading a normal life. For details of these, you
