Back-to-school book grants available 21.08.07

CASH-STRAPPED parents in Inishowen will be glad to know there is a book grant available to relieve the financial burden of sending their children back to school.
The grant is for families who are experiencing hardship as a result of unemployment, ill health or other circumstances.
Donegal North East T.D., Deputy Niall Blaney welcomed the measures.
“This scheme under the Department of Education and Science is designed to help families who may feel the pinch as school resumes in September,” said Deputy Blaney.
“There are a lot of expenses associated with returning to school and that is why this scheme and the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance are particularly helpful to parents at this time of year."
More than 250,000 students in primary and post primary schools around the country will benefit from the latest round of education grants.
“We know that where school book rental schemes are in operation, that as well as relieving the financial burden on families, it has a positive impact on a child’s educational experience.”
Deputy Blaney also encouraged parents to avail of the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance advertised by the Department of Social and Family Affairs from yesterday.
Under the scheme, parents receive €180 for each eligible child aged between 2 years and 11 years and €285 for each child aged between 12 and 22 years.
“This grant is designed to help people depending on certain social welfare and Health Service Executive payments, or taking part in approved employment schemes or training courses," he added.
