DRIVERS who risk
drunken or dangerous driving along the
Inishowen/Derry border this Christmas will be caught
by either Gardaí or police.
That was the message yesterday at the launch in
Bridgend of the second joint Christmas road safety
campaign which will see simultaneous checkpoints and
shared communication between officers on both sides
of the border. |
The joint Garda/PSNI
initiative began last year to tackle drink driving
among festive revellers travelling between Inishowen
and Derry.
Garda Traffic Inspector Pat O'Donnell yesterday
warned there would be "no hiding place" for
over-the-limt drivers.
"It's important that we have a joint approach over
the Christmas period and with this |

co-ordinated operation
there will be no hiding place for drunk drivers.
"If we have an incident on this side where a person
turns back or tries to run for the border, we will
be in contact with our colleagues on the other side
and the person will be intercepted," said Garda
Traffic Inspector, Pat O'Donnell.
"It will just be a matter of the person deciding
where they want to be arrested."
Meanwhile, provisional Garda statistics show that in
the seven day period from November 19 to November
25, a total of 359 drink driving incidents were
recorded nationally. |
