Buncrana woman among Labour Party 'great hopes' 27.03.07

A Buncrana woman offers ‘great hope’ for the Labour Party in the future, the party leader has said.
Pat Rabitte said Donegal North East candidate Siobhan McLaughlin was among the young members who would help reorganise and rebuild the party in Donegal.
Mr. Rabbitte conceded that Donegal had never been a Labour stronghold. But he said candidates like Siobhan McLaughlin in the North East constituency and Seamus Rodgers in the South West, could reverse that trend in future elections.
“Donegal has never been a Labour stronghold. I would concede that the Labour Party has gone through a hard time in the two Donegal constituencies in the recent past, but the fact of the matter is that there is great buoyancy in the Labour Party nationally,” said Mr. Rabbitte. Siobhan McLaughlin
“I think more people are coming around to the need for change. I think they are attracted to the five commitments for change that I set out in my annual conference speech.
“In Siobhan McLaughlin and Seamus Rodgers we have a very well balanced team in Donegal,” Mr. Rabbitte told Highland Radio on Monday.
Mr. Rabbitte said he couldn’t say how well the Labour Party would do in Donegal in the forthcoming general election.
But he indicated that the two current candidates could help build loyalty to the party in the coming years.
“Seamus Rodgers has a long and honourable record of public service in Donegal South West and Siobhan McLaughlin is a young woman that offers great hope for us in the future.
“We are committed to rebuilding and reorganising the party in the two Donegal constituencies because I think that people ought to be given an alternative,” he said.
