A Clonmany businessman
told a Garda he would "do (him) in", a local court
has heard.
Marius O'Donnell, Gaddyduff, who runs a cafe in
Clonmany, pleaded guilty to threatening the young
officer on Hallowe'en night last year with the
words: "You're not always in uniform and I will get
you...do you in, you f***."
The incident arose at 9.05pm after the Garda
confiscated illegal fireworks from the 54-year old
defendant's son.
Defence solicitor Frank Dorrian said his client had
received an incorrect report that the Garda in
question had mistreated his son.
"It was a case of a father getting a little inflamed
when he heard that something untoward had happened
to his son," said Mr. Dorrian, adding that his
client had been "overwrought and misinformed". He
also stated that his client disputed the exact
wording of the verbal exchange that took place.
The Garda told the court that the defendant's son
had given "no bother whatsoever" and no incident had
arisen between them. Judge Derek McVeigh took a dim
view of the matter.
"He's 54 and that's the way he talks to a Garda. The
court treats that seriously," he said. He imposed a
fine of €500 giving the defendant five months to
pay. |
