Name chosen for Buncrana

Gaelcholáiste Cinéal
Eoghain has been chosen as the name for the Irish
language secondary school opening this year at
Tullyarvan Mill, Buncrana.
Local Sinn Fein councillor, Daren Lalor, a founder
member of the Gaelcholáiste, told InishowenNews.com
he was delighted with the chosen name. |

He explained that
Cinéal Eoghain, meaning 'Extended Family of Eoghain',
represented the "historical landscape before
partition".
The Principal of the new school Éabha Ni
Mhuineacháin, along with the founding committee,
parents and students agreed overwhelmingly on the
new title. It was chosen recently at a meeting at
the Inishowen Gateway Hotel in Buncrana.
"The phrase Cinéal Eoghain is rich in resonance
throughout West and North Ulster, particularly in |
Inis Eoghain and Derry
City," said Cllr. Lalor.
"Niall Na Naoi nGiallach, father of Eoghain and
Conall among others, is the progenitor of most
Ulster Gaelic surnames.
"Eoghain, in turn, became the father figure for the
McLaughlins and O Neills, Conal for the O Doherty
and O Donnells."
Eoghain who gave his name to Tyrone and Inishowen,
is believed to have been baptised by St. Patrick in
the ancient ringfort of Grianán at Aileach at Burt.
Centuries later, Aileach became the centre of
political power in Ireland. He is buried in nearby
Uisce Chaoin, (the place of gentle water), having
died in 465 AD.
Cllr. Lalor added: "The emergence of a Gaelcholáiste
is a boost for many involved in cultural and
educational development in the area. It is believed
that stronger links will now develop with the
greater Derry City area, with Letterkenny and with
the Gaeltacht." |
