Doherty bids for Seanad history 16.07.07

Buncrana-based Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn was among Sinn Féin councillors from throughout the country at Leinster House last week to vote for their Seanad candidate, Cllr. Pearse Doherty.
If the Gweedore-based councillor is elected, he will become the first Sinn Féin senator in contemporary politics.
It would also mean that Sinn Féin becomes the only party on the island to be represented on every single electoral forum.

Chairperson of Donegal Sinn Féin, Mick Quinn said: "We are very proud that a Donegal man could soon become the first Sinn Féin senator in recent times.
"Pearse has proven himself to be an outstanding public representative for Sinn Féin in Donegal and if he is successful in this Senate campaign, I
am sure that he will be an excellent representative nationally."
Mr. Quinn said the party's backing for Doherty was "a huge vote of confidence in Donegal Sinn Féin".
"While we were obviously disappointed not to have won seats in the recent Dáil election, we have made huge strides in terms of support and we will redouble our efforts to elect more councillors in the local elections only two years away and then to elect two Sinn Féin TDs in Donegal North East and Donegal South West at the next general election," he added.
